The City’s Landscape
San Juan Capistrano has the Mission San Juan Capistrano at its center. Strip malls and homes surrounding the mission are designed with Spanish architectural style similar to that of the mission. The city boasts of the most diverse styles of homes in the county. It has homes built during the 18th century in the central district, some of which are adobes, working ranches located in the city’s foothills, and multi-million dollar homes safely housed in gated communities. Aside from human residents, the city is also home to cliff swallows that migrate annually from Argentina to the mission.

The Educational Environment
San Juan Capistrano is included in the Capistrano Unified High School District.
The San Juan Hills High School had 600 freshmen students in the academic year of 2007-2008. This is the only public high school in the city. It now educates almost all of the high school students from San Juan Capistrano, as well as those who are from San Clemente High School, Capistrano Beach, and southern Ladera Ranch. These residents refused to send their students to a school in San Juan because it was too far from the schools that they used to attend in their own communities. The tension between the residents of these communities has died down, but there is still lingering resentment in the fact that students from Capistrano Beach, who used to attend the San Clemente High School, are required to go to a much more distant high school in San Juan. The residents are lobbying for the Orange County to stick to its original long range plan and finish the making of the La Pata Parkway that passes through San Clemente. Once the project is completed, it would allow students residing in the Talega subdivision to go to the school that was built for them instead of still going to the San Clemente High School.
There are four private college prep Christian schools in the city. Three of the schools including the Capistrano Valley Christian Schools, Saddleback Valley Christian School, and St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, are all offering Pre-K through 12th grade. Only the J. Serra Catholic High School is offering 9th to 12th grade.
There are also two private kindergarten through 8th grade schools in the city, called the Rancho Capistrano Christian School and Mission Parish School. The Rancho Capistrano Christian School is on the Crystal Cathedral’s south campus, specifically off Highway 5. It also doubles as a venue for summer camps, conventions, and meetings. The Mission Parish School is located right on the Mission grounds and event uses some of the ancient buildings’ rooms as classrooms.
