Geography and Location

Seal Beach is located in Orange County’s westernmost corner. The city of Long Beach lies on the northwest part, just across the border with Los Angeles County while San Pedro Bay is just adjacent to the Seal City. Huntington Harbour and Sunset Beach, both part of the Huntington Beach, are located on Seal City’s southeast area. Seal Beach’s racial makeup was composed of 20,154 (83.4%) Whites, where 76.9% of them are non-Hispanic Whites; 2,309 (9.6%) Asians; 279 (1.2%) African Americans; 65 (0.3%) Native Americans; 58 (0.2%) Pacific Islanders; 453 (1.9%) coming from races other than these; and 850 (3.5%) coming from more than two races. Latino or Hispanic were around 2,331 people or 9.6%.

According to the US census, there were 23,943 people or 99.1 percent of the whole population who were living in households, 203 people or 0.8 percent who were living in institutionalized groups, and 22 people or 0.1 percent who were living in non-institutionalized groups.

All in all, there were 13,017 households in Seal Beach. Out of this number of households, 1,866 or 14.3 percent of them were having their children under 18 years old who are living with them. There were 4,891 or 37.6 percent of opposite-sex married couples who were living together. There were 788 or 6.1 percent of the households having a female householder without a husband while 283 or 2.2 percent having a male householder without a wife. There were 383 who were unmarried opposite sex partners in the total household population of Seal Beach and 66 who were same sex married partners or couples.

Of the total households, 6,312 were individuals and 4,340 were having someone living ‘alone’ who was 65 years old and above. The ‘average’ household size in the city was 1.84 where a total of 5,962 families were living in. The ‘average’ family size, on the other hand, was recorded as 2.65.

The average density of housing units in Seal Beach is 1,116.4 per square mile— 9,713 owner- occupied and 3,304 renter- occupied. The ‘homeowner’ vacancy rate was 2.0 percent while the ‘rental’ vacancy rate was 4.4 percent. There were 17,689 people who lived in ‘owner-occupied’ housing while 6,254 people lived in those rental housing units available in the city.

Annual Festivals and Events

The Seal Beach city is known for its many festivals as well as annual events. Two of the most popular events in the city are the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast that happens in April and the Fish Fry in July. The same weekend of the Fish Fry event, another event happens—the Rough Water Swim, which is being celebrated since the year 1960.

Many events were also sponsored by the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce including: a Classic Car Show (April), a Summer Concert series (July and August), the Kite Festival (September), and the Christmas Parade and Santa & the Reindeer (December).

Education in Seal Beach

Currently, Seal Beach is under the Los Alamitos School District. However, younger students (K-5) go to different elementary schools such as the Hopkinson Elementary School, Lee Elementary, Los Alamitos Elementary, McGaugh Elementary School, Rossmoor Elementary, as well as Weaver Elementary. Students in their 6th and 8th year, on the other hand, go to ‘Los Alamitos’ High School. The Orange County High School of Arts was a part of ‘Los Alamitos’ High School until the year 2000. However, it was in the same year when the school district suffered a major problem because the Orange County High School of the Arts was relocated to Santa Ana.
