Escondido used to be an agricultural community with grapes as the main harvest. Since a dam, now called as Lake Wohlford, was constructed in the year 1894 to 1895, more lemon and orange trees were grown, as well as walnut and olive trees. Came the 1960s when the community was focused on growing avocados as the main local crop. But from 1970s onwards, Escondido started converting agricultural lands into housing developments.
The City and Its Neighborhoods
Escondido has shown signs of growth with the development of new communities such as Hidden Trails at the East Valley Parkway. The city itself has neighboring unincorporated communities with only a few residents including Hidden Meadows and Jesmond Dene on the north, Rincon Del Diablo on its southeast, and Felicita Park on its southwest. The residents in these surrounding communities use Escondido zip codes and mailing addresses, with some of their kids sent to Escondido schools. However, they are not eligible as voters in the city elections.
There are several other neighborhoods in the city. Downtown Escondido is located on Grand Avenue right in the middle of Palomar Hospital and Centre City Parkway. The Downtown Specific Plan Area occupies around 460 acres, with its western neighbor being the Centre City Parkway, its eastern neighbors being the Hickory and Ivy Streets, the southern neighbor being the Fifth Avenue, and the northern neighbor being the Washington Avenue. It also has a narrow section that runs along Valley Parkway to Interstate 15.
Old Escondido is also flanked by several neighborhoods. To the east is Chestnut Street; to the west is Escondido Boulevard; to the north is Fifth Avenue; and to the south is Thirteenth Avenue. Most of the housing units in this part of the city are composed of single families.
The Population
According to the 2010 United States Census, there were 143,911 residents in Escondido. This meant that the population density was 3,890.7 people per square mile. There were also 60.4% Whites, 2.5% African Americans of which 2.1% are non-Hispanic black, 6.1% Asians, 1.0% Native Americans, 0.2% Pacific Islanders, 25.4% descended from other races, and 4.4% descended from two or more races. Of these residents, there were 48.9% Latinos or Hispanics. There were also 40.4% Non-Hispanic Whites, which is a huge decrease in this race from the 82.1% in 1980.
The Census also showed that 141,792 people resided in households, 1,333 resided in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 786 resided in institutionalized group quarters.
The city had 45,484 households. Of these households, there were 18,989 with children below the age of 18 in the same home, 23,535 were made of opposite-sex married couples, 6,082 were home to a female household, 3,115 were home to a single male householder. The population in these housing units became even more married as there were 3,121 units with unmarried opposite-sex partners, 9,528 units with only individuals in them, and 4,235 units with adults who are 65 years and older and who are living alone. Escondido had an average household size of 3.12. The city was also a home to 32,732 families with an average family size of 3.57.
The age of the population also varies. There were 39,778 people who were minors under 18; 15,455 who were 18 to 24 years old; 41,043 who were 25 to 44 years old; 32,551 who were 45 to 64 years old; and 15,084 who were 65 years old or older. The median age of the city’s residents was 32.5 years. There were 98.2 males for every 100 females. There were also 96.1 males for every 100 females who are of legal age.
Escondido had 48,044 housing units with 1,298.9 units per square mile as the average density. 23,759 of these units were occupied by owners while 21,725 were rented. The city’s homeowner vacancy rate in 2010 was 2.2% while the rental vacancy rate was higher at 6.0%. Of the city’s population, 70,936 treated owner-occupied units as their home while 70,856 treated rental housing units as theirs.
The Climate
Escondido has a Mediterranean climate full of cool wet winters and warm summers. Because the city is closer inland, it is warmer than the coastal cities of Carlsbad, San Diego, or Oceanside during summer, but it is also considerably cooler during winter. The city receives an average of 17 inches of precipitation every year. It is higher in the eastern and northern hills of the city, with rainfall totaling 20 to 24 inches in areas that has a 2,000 feet elevation or higher, and about 35 inches in an area called Palomar Mountain, located 15 miles east of the city. Most of the rain falls from November to March. Snow is uncommon, although thunderstorms during the winter and spring sometimes bring small hail. The city is blessed with a mild climate that supports the growth of oranges and avocados.
The Lakes
There are three lakes in or around Escondido that are perfect for fishing and boating. The city has Dixon Lake to the north, Lake Hodges to the south, and Lake Wohlford to the north east, near the city limits.
The Schools
Escondido is a home to schools such as the Escondido Union School District, the San Pasqual Union School District, and the Escondido Union High School District. It has 19 elementary schools, five middle schools, and seven high schools.
Its public high schools include the Escondido High School, San Pasqual High School, Orange Glen High School, Center City High School, Classical Academy High School, Escondido Charter High School, Del Lago Academy: Campus of Applied Science, and Valley High School.
The city’s middle schools include the Bear Valley Middle School, Rincon Middle School, Hidden Valley Middle School, Del Dios Middle School, and Mission Middle School.
Its elementary schools include the Bernardo Elementary, Conway Elementary, Classical Academy, Central Elementary, Farr Avenue Elementary, Coastal Academy, Miller Elementary, Glen View Elementary, Felicita Elementary, and Heritage K-8 Charter. It also has Juniper Elementary, Oak Hill Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, L.R. Green Elementary, Nicolaysen Community Day, Orange Glen Elementary, North Broadway Elementary, Rock Springs Elementary, Reidy Creek Elementary, Pioneer Elementary, and Rose Elementary.
These schools differ widely in their API scores, which further proves the city’s diversity. There were two elementary schools in the city that achieved an API score above the 80th percentile of all the schools located in the state in 2009. However, there were nine elementary schools that scored below the schools’ 20th percentile.
